| LASIK | PRK | |
|---|---|---|
| How it works | Flap created; laser reshapes underneath; flap replaced | Surface cells removed; laser reshapes cornea directly |
| Recovery | Clear vision in 24–48 hours | 1–4 weeks for full recovery |
| Best for | Most patients with adequate corneal thickness | Thin corneas, contact sports, certain occupations |
| Long-term outcomes | Equivalent — both achieve similar vision results | |
After surgery, you need follow-up at day 1, week 1, month 1, and several times over the following year. Avalon Eye Care handles all your post-operative care right here in Vaughan — no driving to downtown Toronto for every visit. We monitor healing, manage dryness, and stay in close contact with your surgeon throughout recovery.
Stop wearing soft lenses at least 2 weeks before your pre-op evaluation. RGP wearers should stop for at least 4 weeks. Lenses change your corneal shape and affect topography measurements.
The only way to know is a comprehensive pre-operative evaluation. General guidelines: 18+ with a stable prescription for 1-2 years, adequate corneal thickness, and no active eye disease. Book a LASIK consultation at Avalon Eye Care in Vaughan — we will give you an honest assessment based on your specific measurements.
No — LASIK and PRK are elective and not covered by OHIP. Many patients use Healthcare Spending Accounts (HSA) or Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) to offset costs. Post-operative follow-up visits may have some OHIP coverage.
Excellent alternatives include orthokeratology (Ortho-K) lenses for daytime clarity without surgery, implantable collamer lenses (ICL) for high prescriptions, or premium contact lenses. Your Avalon Eye Care optometrist will walk through all options with you.

Dr. Nadine Solaka at Avalon Eye Care has an extensive experience in the pre-operative evaluation and post-operative care of LASIK and other vision correction procedures. We will examine your eyes and discuss your visual goals to help determine if you are an appropriate candidate for LASIK, PRK or Cataract Refractive Technology. If you have appropriate goals and there are no contraindications for the procedure, we will recommend a pre-operative evaluation to determine suitability for refractive surgery. This evaluation includes:
If after the pre-operative evaluation, the decision is made to proceed with surgery, your information will be forwarded to the surgeon, a pre surgery consult with a surgeon will be scheduled. Post-operative management will be provided by our doctors, and includes multiple visits over a period from the date of surgery to include medical evaluation and management of the vision and corneal healing. Evaluation of any additional needs such as reading glasses, sunglasses, or enhancement laser procedures is also included.
LASIK is currently the most popular vision-correcting or "refractive" surgery available. But there are other options as well. We will help you find the ideal solution for your problem and partner with the best surgeon to perform your procedure.
