Family Eye Care in Vaughan, From First Steps to Golden Years

Healthy vision changes as your family grows. A baby's eyes are still learning to work together, school kids need sharp vision to learn, parents juggle screens and long days, and grandparents need regular checks to protect their sight. At Avalon Eye Care in Woodbridge, our optometrists look after every member of your family in one place, with a plan that fits each stage of life.

Here is what eye care looks like at every age, and how we can help.

Your Family's Eye Care Journey

Babies & Toddlers

6 months to 2 years

A first eye exam between 6 and 12 months checks that both eyes are healthy, working together and focusing normally. Babies do not need to read letters: our optometrists use lights, pictures and gentle tests made for little ones.

Preschool & JK

Ages 3 to 5

Vision problems such as lazy eye and eye turns are easiest to treat when caught early, before school starts. Children in Junior Kindergarten can also take part in the Eye See Eye Learn program, which provides a free pair of glasses to JK children in Ontario who need them.

School-Age Kids

Ages 6 to 12

Much of what children learn in class is visual. A yearly eye exam checks reading and focusing skills, eye teamwork and nearsightedness, which often starts in these years. If your child is becoming more nearsighted, we can talk about options to slow it down.

Teens

Ages 13 to 19

Teens spend long hours on screens and are often ready for contact lenses for sports or everyday wear. We teach safe lens care and keep checking that prescriptions keep up with growing eyes. Yearly exams are covered by OHIP up to age 19.

Adults

Ages 20 to 64

Busy parents tend to put their own eyes last. Regular exams catch digital eye strain, dry eyes and early signs of conditions such as glaucoma and diabetic eye disease, often before you notice any change. From your 40s, near vision changes and we can help with progressive and reading lenses.

Seniors

Ages 65 and up

The risk of cataracts, glaucoma and macular degeneration rises with age. A yearly eye exam with retinal imaging helps protect your independence, from reading to driving. OHIP covers a yearly eye exam for seniors 65 and over.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should each member of my family have an eye exam?

As a general guide: a first exam between 6 and 12 months, at least once between ages 2 and 5, every year from 6 to 19, every one to two years for adults 20 to 64, and every year from 65. Your optometrist may suggest more frequent visits if there is a medical reason, such as diabetes.

Does OHIP cover eye exams for my family?

OHIP covers a yearly eye exam for children and teens 19 and under, adults 65 and over, and people with diabetes or certain other medical eye conditions. Adults 20 to 64 without a qualifying condition pay privately or through extended health benefits, which we bill directly.

Can I book eye exams for several family members together?

Yes. Book each person online, or call us at 905-856-3937 and we will do our best to schedule family members back to back so you only make one trip.

At what age can a child wear contact lenses?

There is no fixed age. It depends on how responsible the child is with cleaning and handling. Many children start between ages 8 and 12, and some begin earlier for myopia control. Our optometrists will help you decide.

Do you see both children and grandparents?

Yes. Our optometrists care for patients of all ages, from babies at 6 months to seniors, so the whole family can come to one clinic in Vaughan.
